Viña Ardanza is one of the signature wines of historic Rioja producer La Rioja Alta. The 2017 is 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. Both varieties undergo extended ageing in American oak, followed by further bottle ageing before release — a traditional Rioja approach that means much of the waiting has already been done for you.

What it’s like

Palate

Fragrant and complex: red cherry and plum alongside vanilla, sweet spice, tobacco, cedar and dried-herb notes. Medium-to-full bodied rather than huge, with freshness, polished tannins and the savoury complexity that comes from extended maturation.

Monster Notes

“This one I like. S$84 and the winery has already done a lot of the ageing for you. Rioja is sometimes overlooked because everybody is busy chasing Bordeaux and Burgundy, but that's exactly why you can still find value. Tempranillo, Garnacha, mature oak character, very food-friendly. With roast duck or char siu, I think quite shiok actually.”
