Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is the second wine of Ornellaia, but it is made very much as a serious Bolgheri wine in its own right. The 2021 blend is 50% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 11% Petit Verdot. Each variety and vineyard parcel is vinified separately before blending, followed by ageing in barriques and further bottle maturation.

What it’s like

Palate

Rich and polished, with ripe red and dark berries, plum and spice, together with balsamic and herbal notes. The Merlot gives generosity and softness while Cabernet and Petit Verdot provide structure and freshness. Full-bodied, but smooth and refined rather than heavy.

Monster Notes

“People see ‘second wine of Ornellaia’ and sometimes think lesser wine. Don't look at it that way. This is proper Bolgheri and 2021 is a very good vintage. Rich, polished, easy to enjoy but still serious enough for the cellar. At S$129, if you want a taste of the Ornellaia style without paying Ornellaia money, this makes a lot of sense.”
