Château Gruaud Larose is a second growth in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it has garnered a reputation for producing some of the most full-bodied and long-lived wines in the region. Known for its classic Saint-Julien profile and sensible pricing, Château Gruaud Larose is a favorite among connoisseurs and collectors alike. The estate boasts 84 hectares of vineyards situated on a gravel-rich plateau just west of Château Beychevelle.
The 1995 Château Gruaud Larose is a remarkable example of a classic Saint-Julien wine. On the nose, it opens with rich aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, and dark cherry. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and well-structured, with firm tannins that have softened beautifully with age. Flavors of ripe blackberry, plum, and blackcurrant dominate, underscored by secondary notes of mocha, dried herbs, and a touch of minerality.
The finish is long and elegant, with lingering flavors of dark fruit and a slight smokiness. The 1995 Château Gruaud Larose is drinking beautifully now but still has the potential for further aging, promising even greater complexity and depth in the years to come.
REFERENCE TASTING NOTE:
The aromatics on this stately 26-year-old wine are just so welcoming. Autumnal leaf, delicate finely-boned tannins, savoury black fruits, feels like you can only be in St Julien, with a caressing if not hugely-persistent structure compared to the 1996. What you get here is a wine with juice, finesse and balance, all extremely moreish if subtle in its charms.
